We Bought A 110-Year-Old Cottage

Pinch me…I can’t believe this day is here!! I’ve dreamt about buying a home since I was a little girl and after months of searching, we found her - a 1,646 sq. ft. cottage built-in 1910. We were specifically looking for a home we could restore and bring back to life so the criteria were - old with good bones and LOADS of character (and a great location obviously). I grew up in Texas and my parents live in a small town outside of San Antonio, so we knew we wanted to find a home close to them.

We first toured the house back in October 2020 when it wasn’t even on the market yet. We were shopping in a small boutique and got to chatting with the lady that worked there. She mentioned there was a house that recently had an estate sale and she thought they may also be selling the house soon.

We drove by and there was a “coming soon” sign outside. After peeking through the windows I was VERY intrigued and called the relator to see if she could show it to us.

We saw about 6 more properties in the area that were for sale, but nothing compared. I was in love with this house and already started calling it our Comfort Cottage (as its located in Comfort, Texas).

One of my favorite things about this house is the entryway! The original cypress wood trim work, wainscoting detail around the bottom 1/3 of the walls, transom windows and TWELVE FOOT ceilings! It feels grand and full of character! Don’t even get me started on the original front door with the coolest doorbell I’ve ever seen. Watch the tour video.

Throughout the majority of the house remains the original pine hardwood flooring which looks in pretty good shape. You can tell at one point (probably the 70’s) they covered all the hardwood with linoleum … and then realized no we want hardwood and poorly removed the linoleum to expose the hardwood again…lol.

The kitchen has definitely been updated since 1910, but they covered a gorgeous tall window in the space with the kitchen countertop. The one bathroom in the house is SO LARGE with high ceilings, and with this size house, I want it to have at least 2 full bathrooms.

The rest of the rooms are very interesting. They listed this house as a 2 bedroom/1 bath, but over the years they built on a lot of little rooms - a sleeping porch, a craft room, laundry room and VERY bizarre hot tub room! The additional rooms were poorly constructed and have lots of water damage, so we’ll salvage what we can but ultimately tear those rooms down.

I have so many ideas from restoring its original details to layout changes for better flow and can not WAIT to get started. The house also sits on .65 acres so there is so much potential to bring this house back to life! We are going to be sharing every bit of this restoration and renovation process with you guys here on the blog and over on YouTube! I hope you guys are as excited as we are to start this new journey!
