How To Get A Cohesive Look & Feel In Your Home

Achieving a cohesive look and feel throughout your home isn’t always easy. The process can become especially difficult when you’re decorating your home in stages and not all at once. I can attest to that since it took me 4 years to finish decorating my LA home!  Just think about how much your taste changes in just one year or how you become inspired by different things as time goes on. It’s important to keep all the rooms in your home in mind when you’re decorating each space to ensure they all flow well together. Here are a few things that have helped me establish cohesiveness in every home I decorate.

Determine the style direction.

The style for your home is based on what look and feel you're wanting to achieve. My personal favorite, or style I draw inspiration from, is Scandinavian.

You can also choose a blend of styles. So, if you love a mid-century modern look and you also like bohemian decor, you can totally marry those styles together by blending different elements.

Choose a color palette.

Just like decor style, color is a great way to have a cohesive look throughout a home. Pick an accent color you really like and add in subtle ways in each room.

I have an overall neutral palette in my home, but I’ve chosen two colors that you will find all throughout - black and rust.

Choose similar furniture shapes/styles.

Furniture style and shape also play an important role in the design. Whether you love antiques, mid-century modern or contemporary, invite that style into every room.

For example, you can use a mid-century modern design for your coffee table or sideboard in your living room and a mid-century bed frame or dresser in your bed-room, etc.

Incorporate a similar decor piece into every room.

I love collecting vintage gold frames so I decided to make them part of the decor in each room. In some rooms, it’s more subtle, while others make a statement (the gallery wall in my breakfast nook).

Select a piece of decor that you absolutely love and sprinkle it into each room in a different way.

I’m a big believer that every room does not need to be exactly the same. They can each have their own character and embody their own style and flair. Think of your spaces as siblings… not twins!

I hope this will help in your journey to find cohesion in your home! What’s your favorite decor style? Let me know in the comments!
