Designing Our Cottage: Floor Plan & Inspiration

As soon as I walked through the door to tour our new home, there were so many things that took my breath away. From the high ceilings and original hardwood pine floors to detailed cedar trim and the DOORBELL … I mean who wouldn’t love that doorbell.

Our plan from the beginning has been to restore the house’s original “parts” which give it so much history, character and charm while also updating it to fit our lifestyles and overall a more modern way of living.

The first step was removing the additional rooms they had poorly added onto the back of the house over the years - the hot tub room, craft room, sleeping porch and laundry room.

With these spaces removed we could redesign the floor plan and add a proper addition to turn this 1 bed/ 1 bath into a 2 bed/2 bath home.

As the original part of the house is only 900 sq ft, we will be building onto the house to add two bedrooms, two bathrooms, closets and a laundry room.

A must have for us was to relocate the existing bathroom to create a more open concept living/kitchen space. I love sketching rooms and spaces I’m designing so here are some of what the existing house will be transformed into.

A major source of inspiration for me is the house itself, but also the time period and location of the home - Cozy cottage vibes with rich wood tones, a stone oven fireplace accented with limestone and vintage decor from my frequent flea market trips. You can follow my Pinterest board “Comfort Cottage” to see all the beautiful spaces that are inspiring our cottage design.

I have so many more cottage updates coming soon to the blog but you can also watch the entire renovation process over on my Youtube Channel here!
