Guide To Decorating For Seasons & Holidays

As store shelves fill with an abundance of decor for an upcoming holiday or season you can’t believe is right around the corner (can you believe it’s almost Fall??), I’ve always wondered if other people actually decorate for each of these seasons/holidays in a big way. Full disclosure I’m a HUGE fan of going all out with Christmas decorations but for other holidays and seasons, it’s more about my home’s feeling over specific decor I can only put out for a few weeks. There are really only three times a year I transition my decor - Fall, Christmas & Spring

FALL

Fall is my favorite season of the year. Everything about Fall brings me pure joy: the warm and cozy fabrics, rich hues, the smell of vanilla and pumpkin spice. I mean, what’s not to love about this time of year!

The ultimate feeling in our home I want to accomplish during Fall is, COZINESS! With the cooler weather, I bring out my chunky throws and plenty of warm blankets. I like warming up the colors in our home by adding textured pillows in rich-colors as pillowcases are easy to swap out and store away after the season. Colors I love for Fall - rust, burnt orange, off-white, chalky deep blue and turmeric as it’s the perfect hue to reflect the changing colors in nature.

DIYing some decor is a great way to decorate on a budget like these DIY-Painted Pumpkins I made last year. Watch my Fall decor DIY video here!

CHRISTMAS / POST HOLIDAY

Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday. It’s such a special time for us at home - spending time with family and all our fun traditions like decorating the house, having gingerbread decorating contests, Christmas movies playing in the background 24/7, matching pajamas— I love it all!

I enjoy being festive but in a very tasteful way. Decorating for us is less about glittery trees and what we decorate with but more about the feeling that our home has. I want it to be warm, cozy and inviting with warm lighting you want to snuggle on the couch next to and watch Christmas movies. I’ve always enjoyed Scandinavian-inspired holiday decor which is very natural with lots of wood accents and greenery.

I love using this time of year to be creative with my DIY’s and have shared so many of my projects on my Youtube channel. Catch all of my Holiday decor videos, here.

Post-holiday I start to phase out the festive decor. I start with removing the tree and ornaments and other small Christmas-specific decor throughout the rest of the house. Since it’s still winter I want to maintain the warm and cozy vibe so some elements are just swapped out for “less festive” options.

SPRING

Around March I’ll start my yearly Spring cleanout and deep clean the entire house from top to bottom. As I clean I’ll swap out the heavy, warmer throws with brighter, lighter ones. I’ll swap darker color decor, like pillows and books with brighter neutral ones and eliminate or “edit out” a lot of decor making our home feel lighter, fresher and airier.

Spring equals new beginnings and I take it as the perfect opportunity for myself to freshen up our existing decor. I also thrift so much that I can easily refresh the look of my home without completely compromising the style and vibe I’ve created. I’ll likely make stylistic changes throughout the year until it’s once again time to bring out the chunky knits and Christmas tree.
